As a charity, Brixton Art Gallery must rely on its own fund raising activities. The gallery has therefore always relied on the help and enthusiasm of its own team of volunteers. Day to day work in the gallery includes invigilating the exhibitions, greeting visitors to the gallery, serving in the shop, answering the phone, serving at private views and events, putting up and taking down exhibitions, and so on. Particularly valued are publicity, accountancy, computer and website skills.
Our Mentoring Programme supports volunteers who seek to develop in areas where the gallery has expertise. For example one volunteer currently assists the gallery's publicity to support her degree course in Media Studies. another volunteer is gaining experience at the gallery to support her prospective career in museums.
