Brixton Art Gallery presents:
In the Bag!
Exhibition 12 February ñ 2 April 2005
Preview Friday 11 February 6.30 ñ 9 pm
'In the Bag!' is a group show of work by 9 artists:
Harald Smykla, Joe Stevens, Karen D'Amico, Lionel Openshaw, Monica De Miranda, My Dad's Strip Club with Chris Graham, Sarah Kent, and Veronika Seifert.
Each artists was invited to choose 3 items that symbolise for them the global economy and consumerism. Their work combines or interprets the contents of each metaphorical 'bag'.
In the age of the global economy and rampant consumerism in which the individual is constantly encouraged to attain the unattainable, the bag has become a contemporary symbol of participation and desire for inclusion and exclusivity, a repository for dreams, desires, memories and expectations.
The bag is here interpreted through video, installation, painting and sculpture: interventionism, mutation and parody, deconstruction and manipulation, interactive and time-based installations. Together the artists' work creates a show in which content, subject and aesthetics challenge our preconceptions and invigorate our way of seeing. |
